Short Type Viva Question and Answers

Q.1. What are measuring tools?

Ans. Instruments that are used to measure physical entities of a material such as length, width, height, temperature, etc. are known as measuring tools.

Q.2. What are the different types of measurement and measuring tools?

Ans. The various types of tools that are used for measurement purposes are surface plate, straight edges, vernier caliper micrometer dial gauge, slip gauge, sine bar, and combination set, etc.

Q.3. For what purpose vernier caliper is used?

Ans. Vernier caliper is a measuring tool. It is used for measuring purposes when a component is to be measured to the second place of decimal, then vernier calipers and micrometer are employed for the purpose.

Q.4. What is the least value that can be measured with the help of a vernier caliper and micrometer?

Ans. The least value that can be measured with the help of vernier or micrometer scale is called its least count where the least count can be found out from the formula as

Least count = \frac{Smallest division on main scale}{Total number of divisions on vernier or micrometer scale }

Q.5. On which principle does a dial gauge work?

Ans. The principle of operation of a dial indicator is that a very slight upward pressure on the spindle at the contact point is multiplied through a system of gears and levers and is indicated on the face of the dial by the dial finger. The dial has a scale division value of 0.01 mm (usually). It can be 0.001 mm for very accurate work.

Q.6. What are Slip Gauges?

Ans. Slip gauges are the practical standard of length for use in the workshop for work when a tolerance as low as 0.001 mm is needed. These are rectangular blocks of steel having a cross-section of about 32 mm x 9 mm.

Q.7. What are length bars?

Ans. Slip gauges are usually used for measuring a linear dimension of about 250 mm. For longer dimension length, bars or end measuring bars are used.

Q.8. From which material length bars are made?

Ans. Length bars are made from high-grade carbon steel with their ends hardened and finished to very fine accuracy.

Q.9. What is a combination set?

Ans. A combination set is a combination of a number of instruments. This is the most useful instrument frequently used in the fitting and machine shop. As the name indicates this instrument consists of a set of several instruments. This contains a square head, a center head, and a bevel protractor.

Q.10. What are the uses of a surface plate?

Ans. A surface plate or a flat plate has a highly accurate flat surface which is used to test the flatness of a surface. In addition, it supplies a datum plane from which scribing, measuring or comparing vertical distances can be done.

Q.11. Define a machine tool.

Ans. A machine tool may be defined as: “A power-driven machine so designed that it is capable of holding and supporting the job to be worked and at the same time direct and drive the cutting tool or job or both to perform a definite metal removing operation in order to produce the desired shape of predetermined size on the job surface which is being machined“.

Q.12. What are the various functions of machine tools?

Ans. For generating any type of surface viz. flat, cylindrical, spherical, etc. the machine tools have to perform the following functions

  • to hold and support the job work to be machined.
  • to hold and support the cutting tool in position.
  • to move the cutting tool, work/both of them in the desired direction.

Q.13. Classify the machine tools used for machining.

Ans. Machine tools used for machining can be classified as:

  • General purpose tools.
  • Special purpose/single purpose machine tools.
  • Production machine tools.
  • Limited purpose machine tools.
  • Specialized machine tools.
  • Special machine tools.

Q.14. What is a Lathe?

Ans.Lathe” itself is a machine tool that holds the work between two rigid and strong supports called centers or in a chuck or in a faceplate while the tool revolves.

Q.15. Name the main parts of a lathe.

Ans. The main parts of a lathe machine are:

  1. Head stock
  2. Tail stock
  3. Carriage
  4. Lathe bed
  5. Main drive
  6. Tool post
  7. Lead screw
  8. Apron
  9. Chuck
  10. Spindle

Q.16. What is the function of the lathe?

Ans. The main function of a lathe is to remove metal from a piece of work to give it the required shape and size.

Q.17. What are the different types of lathes?

Ans. The different types of lathes generally used are:

  1. Speed lathe
  2. Engine lathe
  3. Bench lathe
  4. Tool room lathe
  5. Capstan and Turret lathe
  6. Special purpose lathe
  7. Automatic lathe

Q.18. What is a lathe carriage?

Ans. The carriage of a lathe has several parts that support, move and control the cutting tool.

Q.19. What are the various types of lathe operations?

Ans. The various types of lathe operation are:

  1. Turning and Boring
  2. Drilling
  3. Boring
  4. Knurling
  5. Milling
  6. Grinding

Q.20. What is the purpose of a mandrel?

Ans. It is used to machine a surface concentric and true with the inside diameter on a particular job. They can be solid or expandable.
